It’s been a great afternoon for Peterborough rugby with both city sides enjoying victories in Midlands Division One East today (Saturday).
At Bretton Park, Peterborough Lions dazzled in the sunshine with a sizzling display of running rugby that saw them destroy Old Northamptonians 65-30, while over at Fengate, Peterborough (Borough) ground out a 25-8 victory over Newark.
Both Old Northamptonians and Newark were unbeaten going into today’s fixtures.
The Lions have now won all three of their games so far at this level - they came up from Division Two last season - and on the evidence of today’s awesome performance it would take a brave man to bet against them achieving another promotion.
“I just can’t believe it,” said stunned Lions chairman Andy Moore. “We’ve played three of the best sides in the division - Bedford Athletic, Matlock and Old Northamptonians - and brushed them all aside. We’re just getting better and better and better. Today we were so superior in all departments, it was incredible.
“All the ONs officials were telling me after the game that we would win the league. It’s a nice compliment but I don’t want to even think about that right now. There’s an awful long way to go.”
The Lions were 14-0 up after just four minutes and led 38-16 at half-time.
They ran in a total of 10 tries with Lithuanian international centre Gedis Marcisauskas leading the way with five.
Other tries came from Manny Van Niekirk, Dan Page, Rob Shingles on his debut, Marius Andrijauskas, and Jacques Vorster.
Jaco Steenberg had a great day with the boot, converting six of the tries and adding a drop-goal.
