About the team

The SURFC 1st XV had a very successful 2017/18 season, arguably one of the most successful teams in the club’s history.
It started with a rigorous pre-season training camp for two weeks in early September run by Ross Hobbs, the 1st XV captain, followed by two pre-season games against Leeds and Manchester Met, laying down solid foundations for the season ahead. The 1st XV had a strong start to the Northern 1A, convincingly beating the likes of Durham 4's, Newcastle 2's, Sheffield Hallam 1's and Liverpool 1’s. Losing only one game all season against Hull 1's, however bouncing back and defeating them in the return leg. In the end, the 1st XV won the league convincingly with a game in hand. 1 down 2 to go.
The second goal of the season was the BUCs trophy, the 1st XV breezed through the early rounds, beating Durham 3's, St Andrew's 1's and Worcester 1's. The first real contest came from Leeds Beckett 2's in the semi-final, a close fought game but one the team came out on top off, beating Beckett by a point despite being down to 13 men. We faced Reading 1's in the cup final in Nottingham on Big BUCs Wednesday for what promised to be a great game. Despite a rainbow of cards awarded by the ref and injuries, the team came out victorious, running out 21-12 winners. 2 down 1 to go.
The third and final goal was the penultimate game of the season; VARSITY. The scene was set, the crowds were in and the biggest game of the year was about to begin. Despite the previous victories over Hallam earlier in the season, they showed up and it was a tough contest. The 1st XV took an early lead and after 60 minutes’ victory was in sight. However, Hallam made a late comeback, putting our defence under immense pressure, we held on the clinch a 26-25 victory. It was an excellent day of rugby followed by and excellent night of celebrations.
The final game of the season was the playoff for promotion into Premier North B for next year. Despite the squad being tired after varsity the week before they managed to get up for it one last time to beat Leicester 1's away capping of a brilliant season of rugby.
