Saturday gave everyone the chance to show what pre-season had given us as a team. We faced Clevedon, who finished 4th in our division last season and were always going to be a team to be wary of. We lost our last league game away to Clevedon, this however, was to be a different story.
All but one of the new signings were in the Brixham line up, all equipped themselves extremely well in the Brixham shirt. They started in great fashion, with an early score for the fisherman, which would help to settle any nerves that may have been present. The pack looked very sharp around the field and looked after the ball extremely well in the break down (Line out needs some ironing out though!!). Combining with this, the backs were very clinical with most of the chances they got and scored some sublime tries, most of which came from individual brilliance and some excellent support lines. Brixham out scored Clevedon, 12 tries to 3 and fully deserved the credit they received after the game from the coaches. I am sure this was also a good exercise for Hilly, the Clevedon coach. They had a couple of key players missing from their lineup and I am sure, as always, they will be there and there abouts come the end of the season. With regards to Brixham, there is still alot to work on and along way to go, before we face the daunting first trip of the season to one of the league favourites, Old Pats on Sat 1st Sept. However,if we continue to build and progress with what needs to be done over the next 3 weeks though, Old Pats may have a tough first day of the season on their hands.
Overall, this was an excellent way to blow away a few cobwebs and allow the players to show their skills and get a bit of contact under their belts. The new lads all fitted in well and I am sure enjoyed their first outing in a Brixham shirt. Many thanks to everyone that came along to watch and the support the squad.
(A big thanks and good luck to Steve Trust, who came on for a fair well game before moving to, yes, Old Pats!! See you soon Trusty)
