Head Coach, Sam Williams refelects on Saturday's game against Ilfracombe

What yesterday proved is that there is a good depth to the squad... another pleasing performance from a much changed side...

This Saturday saw us finally make the trip to North Devon as the weather allowed Ilfracombe to finally host us at the 3rd attempt, with the weather holding off and the pitch, dry albeit rather spongy under foot.

As this was originally slated as a free weekend we had to contend with the absence of several players who have given us significant go-forward this season, as well as at piece dominance. That said we were still able to field a strong side, and the game provided an opportunity for several players to get game time, including the return of Jake Watts to the 1st XV in a couple of seasons and also for Chris Gibbons to play a full half for the first time since his injury lay-off. Both made significant impacts off the bench, with the set piece and carrying aspects of the game improving with their arrival.

Ilfracombe's performance, and the individual quality of a number of their players belied their league position and I am sure that their fortunes will change shortly. In truth we were far from our best and the long journey combined with so many changes meant it took us a while to find our rhythm. Going into half time at 19-19 meant that the team talk was relatively simple, in that all that was required was to be the better side for 40 minutes.

The second spell saw the pack find some flow and the phase play that has been a feature this year returned, as did our line speed.

This led to Ilfracombe starting to make mistakes that were absent in the first 40, and the Withy boys grow in confidence. 2 tries were scored in the second period, and none conceded meaning that we picked up another try bonus point win on the road.

What yesterday proved is that there is a good depth to the squad, and that the players understand the game plan, and are moving to a point where regardless of selection we are able to perform consistently.

Special mentions must go to Ben Dawson, who on his return to the 1st XV after several games with the colts scored two excellent tries, the second a superb solo effort. Also a big shout to George Toomey who performed well despite not feeling too well, and to Will Hockin who picked up the defensive slack and got his head in the spokes on several occasions.

All in all, another pleasing performance from a much changed side, and another banana skin avoided. Good luck to Ilfracombe for the rest of the season and thank you for your hospitality.

Next week we return to Raleigh Park to take on Totnes and with a fuller list to choose from I'm sure selection this week will be tricky to say the least!
