History

The current incarnation of a Wick village football club dates from 1971, when two previously established teams in the village amalgamated. In its first season this newly amalgamated team won the Regional Division III title before opting to transfer to the Bristol & District
League. Life in the Bristol & District League saw success in 1974 when the division IV title was claimed, and in the following season when the side went on to successfully win the GFA Minor Cup. This sparked a lengthy period of progress as the club expanded by introducing a reserve side. Triumph in the 1978 GFA Junior Cup was followed by promotion for both sides in 1982 – the reserves finishing runners up in Division VI and the first team topping the Senior Division to gain election to the Bristol Premier Combination. Two years later, the first team were Premier Combination Division I champions and the reserves completed a memorable double by taking the District Division III crown.

There then followed a lean spell which included relegation before the first team (then known as RMC Wick through its sponsorship with the local quarry), landed the GFA Junior Cup again in 1998. This success heralded the start of another successful spell at the club, when in the 1999/2000 season the first team returned to the Bristol Premier Combination as Bristol & District Senior Division champions. The next season saw further promotion to the Premier Division of the Premier Combination at the first attempt, and after a period of consolidation Wick won the Bristol Premier Combination Cup in 2003 and again in 2005.

An influx of new young players led to the introduction of an A side in the District League as the club went from strength to strength achieving a fourth place spot in the Premier Division in 2004, while there were promotions for both the A side and the reserves, though the latter proceeded to go straight back down to Division II a year later. The first team flew out of the traps in the 2004/5 season and led the Premier Division table until Christmas, but dreams of County League football were ended by a poor run. Gary Johns then took on the managerial reins of the first team and under his stewardship the sports ground underwent a period of improvement and development, which has provided the club with the foundations it needed for acceptance into the Gloucestershire County League.

The 2007/8 season saw promotion of the reserves to the Bristol & District Senior Division. After a number of years trying and with continued development of the clubs facilities at Oldbury Lane, Wick finally finished in a promotion spot finishing the 2016/17 season a very close second to Cribbs reserves. The current first team has been superbly put together and managed by Mike Strawford and his assistant Nigel White, and this young team are eager to test itself at Gloucestershire County League level.

With three senior sides playing on a Saturday and a successful vets side on a Sunday, Wick are now looking to add a junior set up to club and are seeking interest from anyone wishing to help take this on. The club is also eager to trace its roots and it is now in possession of a number of Wick village football team photos dating back to 1908.
