Five man forward line bamboozles Polytechnic. Where was Brownie?

Wickham have been threatening a goal rush for several weeks and it came on Saturday against Polytechnic when everybody wanted to score – 5 of them did and, but for the heroics of the Poly keeper, a few more may have added their name to the list.

Polytechnic started off brightly but they were hit with three quick goals in succession which knocked the stuffing out of them.

Charlie Kallas made, and scored, the first goal by skilfully controlling a hopeful long ball into the Poly half - he then swept it into the top left hand corner leaving the keeper flabbergasted. That opened the floodgates and Alfie Airey made it 2 – 0. Sam Murray then smashed home an unstoppable shot from 20 yards which crashed into the net off the underside of the crossbar. So half an hour gone and the game already out of the visitors reach.

We didn’t expect Polytechnic to throw the towel in and they reduced the deficit when our defence went to sleep for 30 seconds. Skipper Oli Clarke soon woke them up -- the Poly keeper prevented another goal avalanche at the Clubhouse end making three brave saves as the Bluebloods rampaged forward like the Mongol hoards of Siberia.

The Mongols were renowned for their mobilisation skills and speed of attack. Their tactics and organisation were unmatched under Genghis Khan and skipper Clarkey did a similar job on Saturday. We dominated the second half, Josh Tutt scored twice, Muzza added another smart goal, Charlie Hackshall notched before Charlie Kallas swept home a spot kick for a foul on Alfie Airey.

Polytechnic did have the ball in the net again but it was ruled out for a foul. We could have scored plenty more but their keeper deserved some of the luck that he had in dangerous positions as he put himself in the firing line time and time again.

MOM had to go to Sam Murray – it was a joy to see the swagger return to a top quality footballer – we now have another attacking dimension going into the final furlong of the Championship race.

This was a team effort as usual but you couldn’t help but notice De Silva’s tackling skill – I think that Ruan could have been an ice skater or ballet dancer – he seldom falls over.

Next week we are off to Old Finchleians – should be interesting as we’ve found our shooting boots at last. We will need to be focussed as Finchleians have played very well against us in recent seasons and games have been close.

With Connor Byrne due on the operating table shortly we are fortunate to have Ben Linter back in action, he played for the Threes on Saturday and came through the game in one piece.

The Threes had a topsy turvy game against Civil Service Reserve... they led 2 – 0 with Joseph Kemp scoring twice early in the game but the visitors blasted back to make it 2 – 2. Kempez completed his hat trick but Civil scored two more to win 4 – 3. An exciting game against a strong Reserves side so well done men

The Reserves won 1 – 0 with another goal from Pat Keane and the Fours got a hard earned point in a 3 – 3 draw with Bank of England. Kieran Hughes and Max Kinloch scored and George Rahilly got us out of gaol with a last minute equaliser. Max seems to have found his goal scoring form and the same goes for Kieran.

The Sixes don’t do so well in Double Headers but they won their first one on Saturday 2 – 1 with Abi Balogun and George Osborne on target. We then lost the second game 4 – 1 oops – Abi scored from the Spot against Carshalton Reserves who are second in the Division. This was an excellent effort by The Scanlanites who are still punching above their weight. They may not be winning many but they are always in with a chance for the whole 90 minutes. They have plenty of games left to play and they will be moving up the table in the next few weeks.
