Previewing the 2015/16 season

The 2014/15 season was a hugely successful one for the 1's, the highlight of which was an exceptional promotion in BUCS 2A. After a shaky start, 2-0 down after 10 minutes away at Nottingham in our opening game, the 1's came back to a 5-3 win and never looked back, running away with the league winning 9 out of the 10 games finishing on 27 points. On Saturdays the team consolidated their position in a new MRHA league, turning in their best performances against the eventual top 2 sides Loughborough Town and Sikh Union. Despite these strong performances a slow start to the campaign meant a 5th place finish, leaving us confident that we can push on towards the top next season. With the solid platform built by this years side, the team for 2015/16 is in a strong position to cement Warwick's position as a tier 1 BUCS hockey side, and to push for promotion in MRHA.

So what is there to look forward to next season? The BUCS promotion is an exciting step forward, pitting the 1's against strong sides from Birmingham and Loughborough, Nottingham, and our friends from Leicester (ed- beat them 3 times last season and they've still been promoted...). This will be a new challenge for the guys, playing hockey at a faster and more technical level will be a step up, but one we feel more than ready to take.

The work has already begun. This summer sees a major fitness drive within the club, with emphasis on proving your fitness in pre season rather than re-discovering it following a month on the beach. With each player challenged to clock between 50 and 100kms over summer you may well see a Magman on the streets near you.

Perhaps the most exciting development within in the club is the improved partnership with Warwick sport as one of just 8 Performance Teams. The extra support through additional coaching grants, weekly fitness and recovery sessions, access to physiotherapy, nutritionists and sports psychologists, means the club benefits from an incredible bank of resources.

This is a hugely exciting time to be playing hockey at Warwick and the upcoming season gives us the opportunity to create a powerful legacy and secure the status as one of Warwick's top performing men's sports teams.

We are encouraging any ambitious hockey players finalising their places at Warwick for the 2015/16 academic year to get in touch with the aim of inviting as many as possible to take part in our pre season. This is an opportunity to get to know both the club and the university before beginning your studies here, and a chance to showcase your ability in front of captains and coaches alike, helping us find the right teams for you before the season begins at the end of your first full week on campus.
