Dominant second half performance earns all three points for Thackley – Pontefract Collieries 2 Thackley 5
Thackley’s visit to Pontefract was the first for several seasons as the Dennyboys continued their long standing rivalry with the Colls. After several matches when we have lacked some of our regular players Thackley’s line up is beginning to look more familiar. Bentham, McGuire and Farrell were back in the starting line up and Hargreaves and Pett returned to the bench.
Pontefract began brightly and pushed Thackley back into defensive mode. They won several corners and the delivery of these was causing the visitors a measure of discomfort. After twelve minutes Pontefract took the lead when their centre half powered in a header. Up to this point Thackley had hardly put two passes together and were looking decidedly second best. Out of the blue Farrell found himself some thirty yards in field turned his defender and fired into the bottom corner. A strange decision by the referee resulted in Thackley being awarded an offside in their own half when they were attacking in the home team’s penalty area. The resultant kick was cleared and from a series of attacking forays Pontefract won another corner which again was converted with a header at the far post. Brown cleared the attempt but the linesman adjudged the ball to have crossed the line. Just before half time Thackley put their first fluid movement of the afternoon together and after slick work from Dugdale, McGuire slid in at the near post to convert his low cross.
Half Time – Pontefract Collieries 2 Thackley 2
Thackley began the second half in much better style. McGuire and Bentham began to link up well with Farrell on the right hand side and with Dugdale, Brown and Wood creating problems they looked much more positive as an attacking force. They had several chances to take the lead before an excellent cross from Dugdale was converted with an unstoppable header from Andy Wood. For the first time in the match Thackley had taken the lead. It was now all Thackley and Pontefract’s goalkeeper came to their rescue on several occasions. Eventually Farrell did provide Thackley with a two goal lead when he chased down a through ball and forced the ball home from a ricochet. Thackley could have further added to their lead after this but substitute Daniel Pett put the game beyond the home team with a goal in time added on.
Final Score – Pontefract Collieries 2 Thackley 5
This result lifts Thackley two places up the table to tenth place but most importantly brings Thackley level with several teams around them which means that further positive results will move us up the league after several weeks in twelfth and thirteenth places. Great credit must be given to the players and management – well done everyone!
