Offensive Showdown Marks USAFL's 2nd-Highest Score of 2016

While rain in the area held evening temps down just a bit below the usual 'sultry'; there was no relief for either defense against scorching-hot scoring, as the St. Petersburg Swans defeated their Metro Rules Footy brethren 24.16.160 - 13.9.72 Saturday night in St. Pete.

Coming off a hard-fought USAFL match at Baton Rouge, the Swans were eager to get their offensive mojo back, having been held to 58 points against the Tigers June 11. Running out with a big percentage win in the second-highest scoring game in the 2016 USAFL season is a remedy St. Pete will gladly take.

In a co-ed game where the sides combined for a whopping 247 points on 62 scoring kicks, it comes as no surprise that astounding performances came from all over the ground for both teams, especially in a first half that belies the final tally.

With Janni Mirosevich, Kyle Roun, Jake Keglor and Heather van der Hoop leading the way, the Kangas led by two at the end of the first stanza, and again built a 3-point cushion at 57-54 with just five minutes remaining in the half.

From there, though, it was Dustin Jones, newcomer Benjamin Walker and Holly Jones that took the reins, leading an offensive barrage that would continue on straight on to full time on a 106-29 tear.

Matt Segedin was named Best On Ground, while huge evenings were posted by Walker (7) goals, van der Hoop (3 goals), Jones, Jaron Weaver, Jordan Calero, Roun and Mirosevich. Mark Earley, Jordan Brower and Austen Kugler also impressed throughout the night, with all-out effort that portends good things for the club as USAFL Nationals begin to appear on the horizon.

Xavier Calero, Shio Benjamin and Amaran Subramanian made their 2016 Metro debuts on an evening that also saw Jake Keglor move into the club's overall scoring lead with 21 majors in ten games this season.

The Swans and Tampa Bay ARFC will host the USA Revolution Men's National Team as the Revos conduct training and tryouts in St. Pete July 22-23-24, as they continue to prepare for the AFL International Cup in Melbourne in 2017.

All Swans home games are broadcast live on RadioStPete.com.
