Vets Winners

Viking Vets were once again playing the annual Windmill Cup arranged by our Dutch Friends and were looking to revenge last year's loss in the final.

The summer holiday seems to be over and we were able to field a very strong 11 man squad consisting of familiar vets faces incl. a long awaited comeback for six shooter John Wayne.

We had 4 games in the group stages and kicked off against a St Andrews side that seemed unfamiliar to most of us. We managed to break out of our usual 'first game of a tournament breakdown' and took a victory of 3-1 against a fit and well playing St Andrews.

Next game was against SCC who started the game with only 5 players. Unfortunately we could not take advantage of this and the stand off ended 0-0. A result we initially were quite happy with as expecting SCC to be a top contender....

Third game against Hollandse was expected to be easier as they did not look that dangerous. However, once again we had to settle for a draw and a 0-0 score line.

Our last game in the group stages was against Hibs who in the meantime had beaten SCC and were playing for a top placement in the group with either us or St Andrews. So the recipe was clear - 3 points min. needed. A quick change in the starting lineup saw Vikings flying off the line scoring one nice goal after another making the final score 5-0.

Vikings ended up winning the group with St Andrews following us into the semi finals as number 2 in the group.

We had a tough encounter against the Belgiums (BLAS) in the semi final where we created many chances but without the ability to convert any to goals. So penalties decided the game and with Rene saving the Belgians' first 3 kicks the game was decided in favour of Vikings.

The final was yet another show down against St Andrews who had won their semi final against the CBD Silverbacks.

Vikings were confident based on the 3-1 win in the group stages but it was St Andrews who took the lead with a screamer from outside the box - albeit with a reflection of Tue's leg....

St Andrews only had 1 sub and started to look tired, so we changed strategy to man-mark and push aggressively forward for an equalizer. After 4-5 minutes of high pressure the relief came when a shot on goal was fumbled on the line by a defender and goal keeper and Kalle managed to blaze through and push the ball over the line together with the 2 opponents. Score line at the final whistle 1-1 and 10 minutes added time and golden goal.

Vikings continued the high pressure and had not seen the St Andrews side anywhere near our box. We had well played attacks, shots on target and great passing but we could not get the ball over the line until we after 3 crosses across the box got some much welcomed help by the St Andrews defense who scored an own goal after the goal keeper cleared the ball into the back of his defender.....

Victory to Viking Vets and the trophy is now back where it belongs!!!!

A pleasure to play the windmill tournament with a great bunch of guys. The commitment and dedication was there the whole day and that made the difference.
