Litherland REMYCA earned their second victory in five days as they beat high-flying Wythenshawe 1-0 in a hard-fought game.

Elliot Toner’s 23rd-minute strike proved to be the difference as REMY overcame the Manchester-based side, who finished the game with 10 men after defender James Moore was sent off for a professional foul.

The contest started in end-to-end fashion as both teams created good scoring opportunities. James Howell’s smart turn in midfield allowed space for Oliver Broe to carry the ball, and after a give and go with James Hammill he worked the space for a shot which was well blocked.

Wythenshawe then had two big chances in quick succession, first through Bryan Ly whose shot was saved by Jack Reynolds and then through striker Darryl Mason, who found himself through on goal but failed to convert as REMY’s goalkeeper made another good stop.

The next opportunity fell to REMY, and it proved to be the deciding moment in the game. A spell of excellent interplay down the right saw the ball fizzed across goal, allowing Hammill to ease it into the path of Toner who remained composed and slotted into the bottom right corner.

Wythenshawe controlled much of the ball throughout the rest of the half but failed to test Reynolds further, and Taylor had the opportunity to double REMY’s lead before the break after a slip from his marker allowed him through on goal – however as the angle narrowed his shot sliced wide of the post.

The next big chance again fell to Colin McDonald’s men as Samuel Bhatti intercepted a forward pass and set Hammill through down the left. The winger had Taylor in support as he barrelled down on goal, but having attempted to beat Kyle Haslam himself he was denied by a smart low stop from the goalkeeper.

The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first as the visitors dominated possession for large spells of the game but failed to break through REMY’s compact and organised structure, and this eventually cost them.

After losing the ball from their own short corner Wythenshawe were left short at the back, and after REMY substitute Che Trapass found Taylor on the break the striker was through on goal before being cynically dragged down by Moore.

Referee Joshua Mitchell didn’t hesitate in giving the defender his marching orders and that proved to be the final nail in their coffin, as REMY saw out the rest of the game comfortably to earn a deserved three points.
