Portishead Pirates Netball Club is backing a plan which would give them a permanent home for training and matches, with three indoor courts.

Part of a scheme aiming to make Portishead a centre for sporting excellence, the proposed development would see the current sports pitches backing onto Gordano school playing fields developed to provide a skate park, football pitches, rugby and cricket pitches, a hockey pitch, indoor netball courts and a fully stocked coarse fishing lake.

Realisation of the scheme is dependent on the support of North Somerset Council in allowing the Town’s Football club site to be removed from the Green Belt and turned over to development.

The football club’s current site is leased from the Town Council, and the club has agreed to relinquish its lease to move to the proposed new facilities. Should the plan go ahead, the new sports facilities will be funded by the development of the current site.

A community consultation will be taking place at Portishead’s Folk House to seek opinions on the scheme. Plans for the site will be on display in the Fedden Room at the Folk House, High Street, Portishead on:

  • Saturday 9th September (10am-12 noon)
  • Monday 11th September (6pm-8pm)
  • Tuesday 12th September (6pm-8pm)

The proposal has won the support of Town Councillors and will is scheduled for presentation at the Town Council meeting on Wednesday 13 September.

“We have some great sports clubs in Portishead which are currently struggling because of inadequate facilities and funding,” said town councillor Peter Mitchell. “The netball club is a case in point. With 70 or so players, it does a brilliant job, but with no money to invest in facilities, the only way we as a town will be able to realise our sporting and leisure potential is by releasing land for development to fund our aspiration. This plan makes the hopes and dreams of the people of Portishead realisable. This proposal could deliver some really impressive playing and training facilities which will allow the netball club to realise its growth ambitions.”
