ENFIELD IGNATIANS continue to languish in the doldrums and, if any comfort was to be had, it was off the field in the wake of the record 100-7 loss to Old Streetonians at the Hackney Marshes (March 2), writes Jonathan Landi.

First of all, a big thank you to Old Streetonians, and their President Dickie Stringer, as they have been particularly close to us in the wake of the death of Lucas Yoxall (pictured), and their splendid idea has seen the player’s Memorial Fund (LYMF) swell by a further £2500 plus.

Old Streetonians came up with the idea of raffling a couple of England v Ireland tickets, with all proceeds going to the LYMF, and this excellent initiative, well subscribed to by both clubs, succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of its instigators. “We had anticipated raising a few hundred pounds but never this much,” admitted Dickie Stringer.

It speaks volumes for Old Streetonians as a club, and a lot, too, for the rugby spirit, that clubs can rally to each other’s side in moments of great distress.

It was particularly poignant, too, that Mark, Lucas’s father, was on hand to press the button (the days of drawing the lucky name out of a hat are long gone) in this high-tech age, and the force was with Ignatians this time as fly-half Tom MacDougall drew the golden ticket.

A little light-hearted barracking ensued, with the draw made in the presence of EIRFC club president Kevin Linnane, but its really heartening to see that the amount raised for the LYMF currently stands (at time of writing) at £7k plus.

The monies raised will be put to good use and will help disadvantaged kids embrace the great game of rugby, as it will enable them to buy kit and even go on tour amongst others,

A full report on the game will be published in the match reports’ section, and the next date for your diary is March 23 when outgoing EIRFC president, Kevin Linnane, warmly invites you to join him for the final President’s Lunch of the season.

Those that have not already done so can book their places by e-mailing Kevin on klinnane@btinternet.com
