Sedbergh put derby foes Under the cosh

Odsal Sedbergh had too much pace out wide for a plucky Undercliffe outfit and revelled in a nine-try romp in a Pennine League Division Three derby at Odsal Rec.

Sedge decided to play up the slope first and, after a number of near misses, wingman Mark Dove collected a bounced pass to cross in the corner, leaving centre Tom Middleton to slot over the touchline conversion.

Prop forward Phil Cornforth barged up the middle in fine style to create the chance for centre Jonny Ward to cross in the same spot but Undercliffe shrugged off the setbacks to pounce on their first visit to the home red zone' with a powerhouse try from second-row forward Steve Helliwell.

Odsal full back Duane Platt effectively joined the line for another touchdown out wide, and visiting three-quarter John Belcher thought he had pulled back the margin, only to have his effort ruled out because of a double movement.

The hosts stepped up another gear when Ward picked up a loose ball on his own line to outpace allcomers in a length-of-the-field sprint to the whitewash, and Middleton added the extras for a 20-4 advantage that looked ominous for things to come in the second stanza.

Just two minutes into the restart, Platt once again joined the line to maximum effect to scorch in at the side of the uprights but Middleton could count himself lucky to be awarded a try when stand-off Bryn Worsley got away with a 'shepherd' before delivering the telling pass.

All-action hooker Luke Sellers took advantage of some tired legs to force his way to the chalk and Dove sailed in for his second after finding acres of space on the flank.
Undercliffe, to their credit, refused to take the easy option and roll over, and determined running resulted in hooker John Appleyard spotting the opportunity to burrow over from acting half.

Middleton plucked the ball out of thin air for another classy touchdown and added his sixth conversion for a personal 20-point tally.

With half-a-century under their belts, Sedge hit the Wildboars with the heavy artillery in the guise of prop Howard Carr but they matched them blow for blow and were duly rewarded with the last say when stand-off Kyle Webster side-stepped his way to the try line to bring matters to a close.
