Get set weekend

A hardy band of club volunteers arrived at the pavilion bright and early on Saturday morning to take part in the national cricket initiative: Get Set Weekend. Get set for the cricket season by doing all the pre-season jobs.

This was a well organised affair thanks to Annette. There was a clear list of jobs both for inside and out. Equipment and materials including drills, screws, raw plugs, staple guns, sledgehammers, spades, forks, postcrete replacement yew hedge plants etc, etc, were laid out ready for use.

The group divided into 2, external works, aka the hedging gang and internal works aka the cleaning team.

Facing a bitter wind the hedging gang kept their spirits up by discussing music, particularly prog rock, occasionally breaking out into song to sing such classics as ‘I know what I like in my wardrobe’ along with others from the cannon of Pink Floyd and Genesis. The yew hedge was thinned, and deer nibbled trees replaced by sturdy specimens grown on in the Keens nursery. The hedge was mulched and fenced off from the munching deer.

Internally the kitchen and fridges received a deep clean. The pavilion was cleaned, the patio was brushed down and Dave Reads framed 10 wicket cricket ball was proudly hung next to Steve Mc Calls similar cricket ball.

Jonty quietly got on with brushing and mowing the wicket, which looks in good order and, well on its way, to be ready for the season's opener.

Thanks to Annette for the organisation and to volunteers Annette, Raggy, Bob, Nick, Ed, Jonty, Chippy, Olly, Sarah, Alexander, Georgina, Chris, Will and Robbo for their time and effort.

The next works party will be Saturday 13th of April. Please make every effort to attend so we can get the ground ready for the interclub game the following day.
