With a 12:00 start, the first half for North Shields started relatively slowly. Only one goal scored by right wing Emily Hargreaves’s who slapped it through the Medic’s keeper into the backboard giving at half time North Shields a 1-0 lead.
The second half with the original starting line-up North shield’s was determined to increase the score board. An outstanding tomahawk from centre forward Olivia Lawson from the top of the D straight into the goal unmatched by any Medics player, was followed by a roaring cheer from the spectators and fellow players. The score increased to 3-0 as left wing Jasmine O’Brien nearly assisted a deflection to Connie Yeomans but managed to shoot straight into the goal despite the Medic’s efforts.
However the celebrations didn’t last long as the Medic’s slipped the ball past NSHC defenders to their centre forward who closed in by Keeper Sarah Massen managed to hit the ball through the NSHC keeper’s legs. The purple’s didn’t falter though: quickly retaliating with another goal by Olivia Lawson who flicked it straight to the back of the net. Almost immediately, another goal was scored by Ella Blakey in a rebound slap off the keeper from Captain Jess Webb. Turning the score to 5-1. Only a few minutes left, after a lot of grafting and hard work from both sides , North Shields were awarded with a penalty short corner. From injection , the ball was to the top of the D then to defensive midfielder Niamh Nicholson who smashed the ball into the goal. Unfortunately, Niamh’s goal was disallowed as the ball never left the D.
Overall, both sides played very well. The Newcastle Medic’s 4s worked very hard on their counter attacks and gave a brilliant effort in their first match of the season.
