Newent RFC 1879

Newent RFC 1879

In the Ross Gazette of 11 September 2013, an article was published under the heading of "Electric rugby in Ross".

Reproduced in it was the original advertisement for a floodlit rugby match which was to take place in a meadow at The Marsh, Ross, on the evening of Thursday 13th March 1879 at 7pm. The two teams involved were Ross and Newent. This is the first confirmed report that a Newent rugby team existed at that time.

The lights were provided by William Blanch Brain Esq to promote & advertise the Pyramid Electric Light Company, London. Almost certainly this is the first time any sport was played under floodlights in this area.

On 20th March 1879, the Ross Gazette published the match report where Newent's team is mentioned . . ." . . . .while for Newent, Hatton, A Hawkins and A Hill played extremely well. Ross won by one goal and six tries to one disputed goal"

Strangely, there is no mention of our President Mike Poole who surely must have been around at that time !!!

I have scanned the original article which I hope you will find of interest (it is attached, with apologies for the quality of the newsprint). I will endeavour to get a better copy from the Ross Gazette to keep in our Club archives.
