Martock RFC 21 - 20 Tor RFC 2xv

On Saturday 23rd January Martock RFC entertained Tor RFC 2nd XV. It had been a few weeks since Martock played a game, so a bit of rust was expected. It was Tor who struck first, scoring a try from a catch and drive, and grounded in the corner. This seemed to spark Martock into life, and some good play got Martock into the Tor 22. The Martock scrum was totally dominating Tor’s, and it was this dominance that brought the equalizing try with Martock pushing over from a Tor scrum, with Bill Stroud getting the vital touch.

With the forwards pretty much dominating every aspect, Martock RFC were able to build pressure which led to Martock’s second try, with Dan Potter scoring his first try for the club. Martock were playing some really slick rugby now, and quick thinking by Tom Flynn who chipped into space allowed for Dan Potter to run on through and score his second. With the half time score a comfortable 21-5, Martock were more than happy with their efforts; the second half however was not anywhere near as comfortable. A combination of a bit of sitting back on Martock’s part and the visitors raising their game saw Tor RFC come back into the game with three tries, with the last one being right on fulltime. With the conversion needed to seal the win, the Tor kicker missed, handing victory to Martock.

The positives are that we won, however we know that the difference in this game is that Tom Flynn kicked all of his conversions and Tor kicked none of theirs. That said we will take these four points and build on it. We faded in the second half, but with recent weather conditions we haven't been able to train either, so it's not surprising. We know what we have to do now though, and this is a great win and a great springboard for the rest of the season for Martock RFC.
