Council agree loan so work on Rec can start

LYDNEY town council has agreed to loan the recreation trust £20,000 so work on the Recreation Ground's drainage system can begin as soon as possible.

Two contractors are said to be in the frame for the job.

Town clerk Sue Watson said: "Councillors have agreed to the recreation trust's request for a short-term loan of up to £20,000 so that the first phase of drainage work can go ahead.

"The drainage system is 60 years old and it has constant use from all the clubs and now inevitably it needs repairing.

"This funding will allow work to start, but will link in with the bigger scheme when they have funding for that."

The Recreation Ground was given to the community by Lord Bledisloe and is looked after by the town's recreation trust, which is overseen by the Charity Commission.

Mrs Watson said the recreation trust was still waiting to receive quotes from one of the contractors.

As reported in last week's Forester, Lydney Cricket Club could fold if they are unable to start the league season in May, while the town's football club has only played four matches at home.

Lydney's tennis and rugby clubs also based on the Recreation Ground have also been hard hit by flooding during the past two years.
