Robins collect their 4th piece of silverware.

“ROBINS” GO BOB BOB BOBBING ALONG TO ANOTHER FANTASTIC WIN
Following the cancellation of the game on Saturday, the weather on Sunday was somewhat mixed with some rain and sunshine that produced perfect conditions to play the Gwent Central League showpiece Cup Final between Blaenavon Blues and Gilwern & District FC.
Despite the evidence of some nerves the Robins started the game very brightly and soon put their passing game together and after 8 minutes were rewarded with an early goal with Joey McCarthy slotting home after some sublime passing from midfield. Blaenavon threatened, but goalkeeper Daniel Hook had everything under control dominating his penalty area and constantly barking orders at his defence of Zac Gethin, Nathan Webb, Captain Mark Prosser and Jason Lewis who were masterful as they have been all season. The midfield of Luke Mears, Joey McCarthy, Blair Keane and “General” Dan Gandera began to really turn the screw on Blaenavon and following some skilful tricks and turns the “General” smashed home a 20 yard shot that blistered its way into the back of the net giving the Blaenavon keeper no chance. The two Gilwern forwards Adam Carrington and Sean Chidgey were working tirelessly up front creating many chances but a goal was eluding them for the time being. Gilwern led 2.0 at half time.
After the break Blaenavon came storming out of the blocks determined to get back on terms but again some resilient defending thwarted their chances leaving them frustrated. After 15 minutes of the second half a tactical change was made and Coach Matthew Williams came on for Sean Chidgey who put in some sterling work. Mazza made an immediate impact covering every blade of grass and was involved in what would be a killer blow for Blaenavon. Mazza produced a super ball for Adam Carrington to slot home his 37th goal of the season which effectively ended Blaenavon’s hope of winning. Physio Kurt Jones was called into action a few times following a few injuries and worked his magic to restore the players’ health. Michael “spud” Randall came on for Luke Mears and held the midfield together well. Gilwern’s third goal was a combination of fantastic footwork by the Robins and Blair Keane, who has been very consistent this season, thumped in the fourth goal. Blaenavon did get one back from a well taken free kick outside the box which was deflected past Dan Hook. Matthew Garbutt was an unused Sub for Gilwern but played a significant role in the Robins success this season. A delighted Manager Tony Carrington says “I am absolutely delighted and thrilled for the boys, they came here at the beginning of the year not knowing what to expect, how we would get on and if we would even get a team. Here we are 9 months later and we were League runners up in Division two, Benevolent Cup, Givova Cup and Open Cup winners. Not bad for a first year, I believe that we have created history in the Gwent Central League as I am not sure if our achievement has been done before. Credit has to go to all the lads that have played this year and given so much, but my highest praise has to go to Matthew “Mazza” Williams who, in the beginning, took a chance with me to get this club back where it deserves to be and I have to say without any fear of contradiction his work ethic and control of the players certainly was the main contributor to our success. Several of the players have likened us to The Chuckle Brothers but I prefer Clough and Taylor”.
“There are a few people I would like to personally thank for their support, Greg Morgan from Robert Price who donated materials towards the refurbishment of the dressing rooms, Llanelly Community Council who contributed to the League fees, Monmouthshire County Council Bryn y Cwm Committee for a grant towards equipment. Our Sponsors Jane and Keith from the Bridge In Gilwern for giving us a “home” supplying food and hospitality after the games and Mr Mike Randall of Randalls Groundworks who supplied us with New kits and continuously funding the club towards running costs and events. Plus other individuals who have donated match balls and sundries. Of course any donations for the coming season will be gratefully received”.
A Presentation evening will be held at the Swan Hotel Abergavenny on Saturday 14th June and if anyone is interested in coming along tickets are £20 a head available from myself. The AGM will follow early July and training commences in mid-July so if any players wish to join our family please feel free to do so.
