u13s win the cup!!

Gateshead Storm u13s put in a fantastic defensive performance to win the continuation cup this afternoon.

They probably went into the game as favourites, but came under early pressure after a dropping the kick off. Coming down the big Batley hill, Oulton were looking very threatening, but Storm kept their resolve firm and held out the attack before completing their own set of six to clear the lines.

A knock on on the halfway line by Oulton saw Storm have their first attacking set and they took great advantage, shifting the ball out to Dan Cassap who shimmied through the Oulton line and sprinted away up the hill to score.
The game continued to be very tight with Oulton throwing everything at the Storm line, but the young men in Blue and Yellow were resolute and refused to be broken.
It was another moment of Cassap magic that extended Storm's lead further and then Will Rolls piled on the agony for Oulton with a trademark try burrowing over from dummy half, 2 Harry Harlow-Stephenson conversions took the halftime score to 16 - 0 to Storm

The second half saw Storm coming down the hill and if they thought it was going to be easier, then they were wrong. Oulton upped their defensive efforts and Storm struggled to extend their lead.
That was until a scrum on the 20m line saw Harlow-Stephenson and Rolls combine at the base of the scrum with a smart interchange of passing to see Rolls grab his second of the day.
Storm could start to relax a little now and the constant pressure paid off. Jacob Schofield was the next on the score sheet with a fine show and go to run 40m and score.
Storm's top try scorer of the season Oshinowo had been kept quiet in the game by some great defense, but he was not to be denied and scored his 34th try of the year after some great awareness from the team on the last tackle which must have seen the ball pass through more than 10 pairs of hands before finding it's way to Oshinowo who could not be denied.
Last word of the day went ot captain Harlow-Stephenson who capped of a great team perfomance taking advantage of a retreating defence to score in the corner and also finished the day with a fantastic touchline conversion.

Dan Cassap took a very well deserved man of the match award, but all 17 players upped their game and played out of their skin to bring home the victory

Storm can now look to the finale of the league season as well as some more friendly games to finsih off an absolutely wonderful 2022 season.
