Garda Vetting

Vetting is the pre-checking of an applicant's background for criminal convictions or prosecutions. Vetting is just one part of the IHA's overall Recruitment and Selection Policy, the aim of which is to ensure that children and vulnerable people playing our sport do so in safe and fun environment.

There are two types of vetting checks available to hockey - Garda Vetting and Access NI. The Irish Hockey Association is registered with the Garda Central Vetting Unit (to be renamed the National Vetting Bureau in line with upcoming legislation) and has appointed an Authorised Signatory (to become Liaison Person in line with upcoming legislation). The Ulster Hockey Union is registered with Access NI and has an appointed Lead Signatory. If an individual is filling a position in the Republic of Ireland, Garda Vetting is implemented. If an individual is filling a position in Northern Ireland, Access NI checking may be implemented.

If you or your organisation (club, branch etc.) are based in the Republic of Ireland, click here for more information on Garda Vetting. If you or your organisation is based in Northern Ireland, click here for more information on the Access NI Recruitment Process.

The Irish Hockey Association has drawn up its IHA Garda Vetting Policy (applicable for the Republic of Ireland) in line with the upcoming National Vetting Bureau Act. In order to support clubs, branches and any other organisations with implementing Garda Vetting, a number of documents have been drawn up. As you work your way through this documentation and you have any queries, check out our Frequently Asked Questions for clubs which should hopefully provide you with assistance.

Please note, individual applications will not be accepted and will be returned to the individual. The IHA will only accept vetting applications via member organisations e.g. club.
