Fantastic effort leaves Corwen manager impressed!

A warm Wednesday evening Karl Fenlons first team took the trip to Corwen recreational ground to take on current league leaders Corwen FC.

Fenlon had must have made numerous starting lineups as the day unfolded but had to change his final decision after players letting him down and Sam Davies not being deemed fit enough to feature.

With a much more depleted squad with a number of usual "starters" unavailable coedys backs were well and truly against the wall.

The first half kicked off and Corwen set out looking to dominate position with their usual slick passing in midfield and looking to play the ball over our full backs for their very pacey wingers to get on the end of.

On 21 minutes one of the Corwen wingers found himself free in the box with only Callum Thurnham to beat, then he proceeded past Callum only to what seemed to be a dive Tom Daley would have been proud of. The referee deemed he was brought down and gave the penalty.

The Corwen player stepped up only for Callum Thurnham to produce a magnificent save, thinking justice had been served coedy didn't react to the rebound and Corwen got their goal.

Only for this incident Coedy matched Corwen in the first half with us creating a good few chances only not to hit the target and not troubling Corwen stopper Nathan Aldridge.

The second half saw Coedy narrowly having more chances and some excellent passing on display.

The hard working Nathan Jones was everywhere on the pitch trying to get coedy back in the game. Half way through the second half and was brought down in the box and after a long consultation between referee and assistant only a free kick was to be given on the edge of the box. Jones then played a beautiful fizzing low free kick which only needed a touch for us to equalise was seen wanting. Easily our best chance of the game.

A couple of corners seen coedy dominate the aerial battle with Rhys Hughes slightly missing with one chance and finding the side netting with another.

A couple of chances for Corwen kept Callum Thurnham on his toes with one save creating a huge round of applause from everyone including the Corwen fans albeit him admitting it was one for the cameras.

Then with a minute to go and us pressing for a goal Corwen broke on us beating our defence who had been excellent throughout the tie, the Corwen frontman struck a powerful strike into the bottom corner this time giving Thurnham no chance of saving.

The cheer from the Corwen support was louder than most Saturdays at the racecourse ground which was complimentary to Coedy as it showed how much pressure they were under after a great hardworking performance.

At the final whistle the Corwen manager came over to give his well wishes and tell manager Fenlon that he was very impressed with the way we played and that Coedy were the first team to give them a real game and much credit to the lads. Keeper Aldridge also stopped to say how impressed he was with Thurnham and that he is sure will eventually be an outstanding goalkeeper in the years to come.

Overall an excellent performance despite a loss, with 5 sixteen year old, a seventeen and an eighteen year olds the lads did superb. Oliver Wright-powell and Tom Lloyd industrious in midfield, Nathan Jones excellent as always, and a solid back four only to conceed properly very late on shown how for we have come as a club since last year with some brilliant additions. Also to note a fantastic debut for Bryn Nelson at left back, solid all game against an extremely fast opponent with also the ability to be calm on the ball to find a pass.

Man of the match could have been anyone who featured as it was a great team performance but the immovable man mountain Sion Turner took the spoils. A dominant display by him along with leadership qualities has seen him develop into an tremendous center half.
