Chew Valley beat Bath Uni for the Somerset Cup Final

Winners are Ginners!! Chew Valley RFC beat Bath Uni 36 - 24!!

A second Somerset Cup final for Chew Valley fielding a mix of players from across all three senior teams.

The students kicked off and kept Chew in their half for the first five forcing a penalty which went to the corner and after an effective maul a crossfield kick to winger Chris Dunstan from outside half James Beverley produced a try in the corner 0.5 on 7 minutes.

A strong run from Joe Webb forced a penalty which Tom Bryan converted 3-5 in 10 minutes.

No 8 Daniel Brooker carried hard to the 22 and a penalty came converted by Bryan 6-5 on 13 minutes.

Scrums were a problem for the students and from a set piece on halfway skipper Dan Gatton sent a long pass to Bryan and his outside break, a thing of beauty, put winger Harry Stride in for a try converted by Bryan 13-5 on 17 minutes.

The students with balls in hand looked dangerous and their maul.was well organised. A penalty in front was put to the corner on 20 minutes with 11 in the lineout a maul try looked certain but somehow prop Dean Brooker came away with the ball and in the hands of Bryan he went to the opposition's 22 and Stride only had to gather his chip to score but the bounce beat him.

With Brooker going to work in the front row with Jack Monk and Sol Thompson the Chew scrum was on top.

After a Brooker clean out there was a dust-up Dean saw yellow as did one of their back row on 29 minutes. The penalty to the corner was mauled close and scrum-half George Chapman went hand to put Stride in at the corner 18-5.

Johnny Eves is on at tight head to add to student woes and win a scrum penalty at the first attempt close to the break. A Matt Blacker lineout take and a proper maul walked Monk in for a try Bryan converted 25-5.

Flanker Tom Waddington, a founder member of Chew Valley juniors 30 years ago put Dean Brooker into. A gap and after some sharp interplay Stride went in for his third 30-6.

The students struck first after No.8 Ollie Radly made ground to feed centre Will Rue James Beverley at 10 converted. 30-12 after 4 minutes.

Rue broke a tackle on 52 minutes to score with Beverley converted. it was 30-19.
Will Trick replaced Ali Russell in the back row.

Bath continued to pressure and with changes in their front row, a penalty to the corner on the hour was defended. But an error in clearing their lines and a maul try on 60 minutes made it game on with the Beverley conversion made it 30 - 24.

Virtually the first Chew Visit to the opposition half and Bryan penalty 33 - 24 in 68 minutes.
Thomas Garland in off the wing made a crucial turnover on 70 close to the Chew Valley line.

With Eves back on normal service was resumed as experience told over youth the scrum was sound and an early engage repeat offence gave Bryan a shot on 75 minutes to take it to 36-24.

Chapman staged a miracle recovery from a chip though to clear imminent danger with 4 minutes to go.

Luke Sparkes brown saw yellow very late but it didn't matter.
