Lions bring home the Barton in massive win at the Morgan Ground

CANNOCK MAINTAIN POSITIVE START IN 9 TRY HAUL.

Cannock welcomed an old adversary Barton in league action today. The message from coach POW was clear before kick off and momentum needed to carry forward.

Cannock started sloppy granted in poor conditions. Two knock ons and a penalty against wasn't the first 10 minutes anybody hoped for. Daniel Blake and Darren Baugh grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and with two strong runs they put the home side in strike territory. Conor Gladstone provided front foot ball for Scott Lathe who found Scott Pedley. The young inside centre drew the last man and assisted the in form Dave Edwards who scored the 1st try of the game.
7-0
Cannock were in full control of proceedings. The trouble being nobody expected the ball to be wet? Jon Freeman, Skipper Ley and Baugh were causing chaos in the loose but the ball continually went forward or lost through slippy hands. The next score came from lineout and with Freeman providing assist to the looping Baugh who crashed over for the score.
14-0
The Lions continued with the ascendency. Jord Pincombe was frustrated with limited ball but he and his backs were dangerous when it did get out. Big Larry (not attempting the 2nd name) petrified his opposite number with some powerful runs. Our new winger Craig LUMP Richards had some good phases in the wider channels. Alex Freeman continued his impressive start in debut season. Humphreys marshalled a comfortable defensive day with all credibility from the on song vice captain. The next score came from some powerful drives from Joe Brookes and Lathe. Skipper Ley was 1st man to the ruck and went through unchallenged at the guard to score Cannock's 3rd.
21-0 HT.
With the 2nd half ensuing changes were made. 'Little Dave Gunter' and Will 'Calm Jukes were now on and attack was the objective. Pincombe made yards and an obstruction from Barton brought a penalty. Skipper Ley called scrum and in doing so made yet another wise choice come decision time. The front row of Lathe, John Shirley and Gunter drove the scrum over the line for Freeman to dot down from 20 metres?
26-0.
Larry broke free with Frost supporting who made even more yardage. With another obstruction Cannock again opted for scrum penalty with the same result. This time Freeman allegedly drove 18 metres with the front 5 doing absolutely nothing to contribute.
33-0.
Pressure was now all Cannock. Humphreys found a gap but with tiring legs had no support. Fortunately another misdemeanour allowed Cannock another scrum penalty. This time starlet Gladstone reaped dividend and smashed through the last tackler to score after the front 5 made hard ground again
40-0.
Blake again broke through. The wing? Fullback? Turned 2nd row is on fire this term and teams struggle to cope with his energy. Yet another penalty and lineout time. Rolling maul and the ever so welcomed returnee Shirley crashed over to cap off a fine performance.
45-0
Frost made another telling break taking 3 visiting players out the game in contact. The ball broke wide. Pincombe to Pedley to Humphries to Jukes. A high tackle halted a 50 metre finish but the prominent skipper showing superior fitness levels was 1st to breakdown picked up and went through unchallenged to score.
50-0.
With the clock nearly ran down it was one more attack to finish the game off. Again strong runs up the middle from Brookes, Baugh and Blake gave the backs space to operate. Pedley saw space out wide and dinked over the top. Jukes exquisitely collected the ball and went over in the corner to finish the game off.
55-0 FT.

Cannock would like to thank Barton for the contest and also applaud their commitment to the course. Cannock would also like to thank their sponsors for continued support.
