A close battle saw Sutton Benger take the spoils

Calne's visit to Sutton Benger's home turf presented a formidable challenge, resulting in a closely contested match that ultimately culminated in a loss.

The game unfolded on a picturesque autumn afternoon, where both teams were eager to showcase their abilities. Right from the beginning, Calne's scrum exerted pressure on Sutton Benger's front five, disrupting their attempts to secure swift and high-quality possession. This set the stage for a fiercely competitive showdown.

Despite our best efforts, it was Benger who struck first, breaking through for a try and converting it within the first six minutes. This early setback stung, especially after we believed we had opened the scoring earlier, only to see our efforts nullified due to an infringement.

Nevertheless, Calne did not falter. At the twenty-one-minute mark, a slick backs move, led by fly-half Liam Kearney, enabled us to level the score at 7-7. Benger, however, regained the lead at thirty-two minutes with their second try, pushing the score to 12-7. Calne number 10 Blair Collins-Thomas extended our advantage with a skillful drop goal, bringing the score to 12-10.

The second half witnessed a resolute Calne. At forty-two minutes, Collins-Thomas secured a crucial penalty within favorable range, opting to take the three points. This momentarily gave us the lead at 12-13, marking our only lead of the match.

Nonetheless, Sutton Benger retaliated quickly, their forwards powering over our try line at the forty-five-minute mark, bringing the score to 17-13 in their favor.

Throughout the match, there were strategic substitutions, yet Calne continued to battle tenaciously. Tom Delaney's try, coupled with Collins-Thomas' precise conversion, narrowed the score to 24-20. However, Benger responded with another try, extending their lead to 29-20.

As the game progressed, Benger continued to assert their dominance, sealing their victory with a late try that stretched their lead to 36-20.

In spite of our determination and spirited play, the final whistle confirmed Sutton Benger's triumph in a closely fought contest. With winger Rory Cranstoun being voted man of the match, the game showcased exceptional skill and the relentless determination of both teams. Calne looks forward to the season ahead.
