History

Caereinion Old Boys Rugby Association (C.O.B.R.A.) was founded in 1978 by a group of teachers and ex-pupils from Caereinion High School, Llanfair Caereinion, Powys. The changing rooms of the school were used for home games, and the kind loan of a field from Pentre Farm provided the pitch!

At that time, there were no rugby clubs anywhere near Llanfair Caereinion, so the establishment of C.O.B.R.A. fulfilled a real need for players both young and old. Initially only friendly games were played but in the mid 1980’s membership of the Mid Wales District League was achieved and the club began an expansion which continues today.

Success in the Mid Wales District Cup was achieved in the late 90’s, followed by a number of Mid Wales League Championships in the early 2000’s. This progress culminated in promotion to the W.R.U. League Division Five North in 2006 with successful campaigns also in the Welsh National Districts Cup competition during the 1990’s onwards.

In 2007, a full Seconds Team was established. Immediate success was achieved in the first full season by winning the Mid Wales District League and by getting to the Final of the Mid Wales District Cup.

The mid 1990’s saw the beginning of the Junior Section which has expanded rapidly over recent years. Teams from under 7’s to Youth regularly play friendlies, league matches or in cup competitions with great success. In 2006, the Youth Team entered the North Wales Youth League and in their first 2 seasons ended up as League Runners-up.

Over the years, the club has ventured on various end-of-season tours with varying success! Trips to Ireland, Cornwall, Newcastle and Scotland are amongst some of the highlights of these very enjoyable experiences.

After many years of hard work and effort by numerous members and supporters, C.O.B.R.A. eventually moved into new premises and grounds at Cae COBRA, Meifod.

C.O.B.R.A. welcomes anyone interested in playing, coaching, organising or watching rugby to join us. A warm welcome will be given to all who wish to become members of our fun-filled, friendly and family orientated club.
