Club History

Burscough Richmond FC were formed in 1975 by Maurice Wilce with the club spending its formative years in the Preston Sunday League before moving to the Preston and District Saturday League in 1985.
The club spent several seasons in the lower divisions before in 1990 almost folding due to financial difficulties. The club was rescued by its current committee and saw the formation of a new Richmond that was to dominate the Preston League for the majority of the next 20 years.
Following the installation of a new committee the club went on to win the first division and gain entry into the Premier league.
In 1993-94 & 94-95 season the club won the Premier league and Guildhall Cup double. The Guildhall Cup final of 1994 saw the club beat Lonsdale 4.2 and the following year beat Bretherton 4.0.
In 1995 the club reached its first Lancashire Amateur Shield final having despatched of teams like Charnock Richard, Poulton Town and Highfield Grange however the final was just one step to many losing to Elton Fold 1.0.
The next season nearly saw the club win a Treble Double having won the Guildhall Cup 5.1 against Ingol Rangers but losing out to Ingol by one point in the league.
The club yet again won the league in 97-98 and the Guildhall Cup in 98-99.
In 2001 -02 the club fought it out with CCA and pipped them to the league title by 1 point whilst the Prestoners beat Richmond to the Guildhall Cup by winning 4.0.
That year saw a change in management for the first time in 12 years when Mike Flynn stepped down as manager to be replaced by Chris Clandon.
In Clannys first season 02-03 Richmond won the Premier League and Guildhall Cup double beating Appley Bridge to the league and comfortably beating Higher Walton 5.1 in the cup.
The following year was a rerun of the Guildhall Cup of the previous season with Richmond again beating Higher Walton this time by 3 goals to 1.
2004 also saw Richmond get to the Lancashire Amateur Shield final again having despatched a host of teams from higher leagues to get there including Charnock Richard again, however were well beaten in the final by Kirkham & Wesham 3.0 who were beating everyone on their way to higher leagues as Fylde FC.
The club returned to the Guildhall Cup in 2007 only to be beaten to the cup by Southport Trinity 4.2 who had also beaten the club to the Premier League title.
In 2010 The club beat Preston Wanderers by 3 goals to 2 in the Guildhall Cup final to win its first trophy in 5 years but was pipped to the Premier league title by Appley Bridge by 1 point. The club then made up for the disappointment of losing the league by a point on the final day of the 2010 season by winning the Premier League title on the last day of the 2011 season again by 1 point, this time from Leyland FC.
The club had by this time applied to the West Lancashire League to play its football in pastures new and were voted into the league in July 2011.
In the first season in division 2 Richmond came runners up to Ambleside and were promoted to the First division.
For the next 4 seasons the first team tried to jump from Division 1 to the premier league but just came up short finishing 4th, 4th, 4th and 3rd.
At the end of the 14-15 season Clanny decided to stand down as manager after 13 years in charge of the team, at the same point club chairman Ken Lomax also decided to step down and the club made Chris Clandon chairman.
The club saw 2 managers come in over the next 2 seasons, Chris Stammers and Michael Clandon, in the 16 - 17 season under Michael the club achieved its major ambitions of being promoted to the Premier league and winning the biggest prize at amateur level, the Lancashire Amateur Shield. Memorable victories against Turton, Garstang (Semi-Final) & Blackpool Wren Rovers (Final) on penalties gave Richmond their first ever Shield win at the 3rd attempt, a night never to be forgotten.
An incredible run in the league saw the side go unbeaten in 2017 and promoted as runners up to the Premier League.
Sadly the following season did not go as all would have wanted and Anthony Murt replaced Michael Clandon as manager of the first team at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Anthony Dever manager of the reserves for ten years decided to call time on his reign at the end of the 19-20 season was replaced by John Barney Barnes.
The 19-20 & 20-21 seasons were not completed due to the COVID 19 pandemic as all sport came to a halt in this time frame.
The league restarted in season 21-22 and at the start of the new year John Barnes resigned as manager of the reserves to be replaced by former player Kenny Hughes and assisted by former manager Anthony Dever.
The side managed to play out the remaining fixtures in the season before the club was forced to resign the team from the league due to no one wanting the managers position and a lack of players for the club, it was a disappointing day for the club.
The 22-23 season kicked off at home to the champions Thornton Cleveleys who were demolished at Richmond Park 5-2, who thought then the season the club would have.
Amazingly the team won all 15 home games, they scored 3 winners in games deep into injury time to take full points and lost just 4 games all season. They were crowned champions on the 3rd May when nearest rivals CMB drew at home and the yellows could not be caught. The trophy was given out on 6th May 2023 at Slyne with Hest. This season also saw the side reach the semi final of the Lancashire Amateur Shield but will forever be remembered as the clubs first Premier League title.
