Club History

Blackpool Sea Eagles RLFC were founded in 2002 by local rugby league enthusiast Chris Aylen, who was convinced that Britain's favorite tourist destination was perfect for summer rugby. Chris, together with Dave Gavaghan and assistance from Blackpool Rugby League Supporters Club began to get together a group of players and arrange a series of friendlies for that summer and were rewarded when on the 26th June 2002, Blackpool Sea Eagles played their first ever game against the Lancashire Police Force at Hutton.

Further games took place throughout the summer, all taking place at Blackpool RUFC. Based on the success of these games, the club applied to join the summer conference and after a successful application became founder members of the North West Division.

The clubs first season in the summer conference saw them compete admirably ending the league campaign with two wins both coming against local rivals Lancaster before crashing out to Gateshead Storm in the 1st round of the National Shield Play offs. 2004 saw the club compete in an expanded 8 team North West Division. An indifferent league season saw the Sea Eagles compete well in every match, but only finish the campaign with 1 point. Despite this disappointing league campaign the Sea Eagles stormed into the National Shield Play offs with victories over North Wales Coasters and Lancaster before sadly losing out to Crewe Wolves 37 - 20 in the Quarter Finals.

2005 saw a massive change. With the strongest Sea Eagles squad in their short history the club enjoyed a much better league campaign ending the regular season with a 50% win ratio .Determined to do well, the team really came into its own when the play offs began. The Sea Eagles went on to defeat four teams on route to the RLC National Shield final against St.Ives Roosters. The final staged at Coventry RUFC saw the Sea Eagles turn in a magnificent performance to register a record 74 -10 win and be crowned RLC National Shield winners 2005.

In 2006 Blackpool Sea Eagles progressed further with the club promotion to the RLC Premier North division playing alongside Cottingham Phoenix, East Lancashire Lions, Leeds Akkies, Huddersfield Sharks, Widnes Saints and West Cumbria Crusaders. . Despite the step up in the quality of the competition, Blackpool soon found their feet recording an impressive 7 victories and eventually finishing in fourth place, just missing out on the play- offs.

Due to a restructuring of the leagues, the 2007 season saw Blackpool return to the North West division. Taking this opportunity to integrate a number of younger players into the squad, the club performed well picking up seven wins and finishing the regular league season in 3rd place. Unfortunately the season ended in the first round of the play offs with a defeat to eventual champions Widnes Saints.

2008 saw the club compete in a combined North West & Cheshire league facing off against old foes Widnes Saints, Lymm (formerly Crewe) Wolves, Rhyl (formerly North Wales) Coasters and Runcorn RLC, whilst also battling a host of new teams in the form of New Broughton Rangers, Barrow Vikings and Northwich Stags. A tough season saw the Sea Eagles finish with only one victory to their name, a 20 - 18 victory over Rhyl Coasters.

The 2009 season saw the club promoted to the North West Premier division alongside Widnes Saints, Lymm Wolves, Wigan Riversiders, Runcorn RLC and New Broughton Rangers. An up and down season saw the club compete well in every game, finishing the season with three victories. In 2010, Blackpool made the decision to take a step down to regional league facing off against new clubs Mancunians, Chester Gladiators, Crewe & Nantwich Steamers and old rivals Wigan Riversiders. A strong season saw the Sea Eagles finish the regular league season with a well earned six wins and progress to the divisional grand final, where unfortunately the club lost out to Mancunians 48 - 14.Despite a disappointing end to the year the club can look forward with great optimism towards the 2011 season.
