1. History


The club was founded in June 2014 after local side Govillon changed their name following a move to Pen-Y-Pound after former club Abergavenny Thursdays folded.

The new club was entered into the Gwent County League First Division for the 2014-15 season. They finished the season as champions of that division after going the entire league campaign unbeaten . This earned the club a place in the Third Division of the Welsh Football League. Success continued during the 2015/16 season as the club won promotion to the Second Division after finishing second in the league. The club also won the FAW trophy following a 1-0 victory over Sully Sports. The 2016/17 saw Abergavenny finish 11th in the Second division but the end of the season saw long time servant and Manager Steve “Butch” Morgan leave the club after 20 years of involvement at Govillon and Abergavenny.

Ben Bannon and Phil Hemmings took the reigns in the summer of 2017 and depsite a major revamp of the squad the finished in 10th place, 7 points ahead of the previous season. The following season saw the team go on a remarkable 13 game winning run towards the end of the season, leaving them needing a win on the final day to gain promotion. The faced Caerau Ely on the final day, a side who also needed to win to gain promotion and unfortunately an early red card for Town swung the game in the host favour and Town agonisingly missed ouit on promotion.

The team then suffered a hangover from that dissapointment and struggled at the start of the 19/20 season whcih resulted in Ben Bannon stepping down in the November. Ben acheived the clubs highest ever league finish 2 seaosn on the bounce and did a fantastic job , building an excellent squad for the next manager.

Ben Murphy was appointed Town manager in December 2019 to replace Ben Bannon. The results were mixed in Murphys first few months but things started to click into place in febraury where town picked up 2 wins and 2 draws. With 10 games left of the season, the season was brought to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic and the legaue decided on points per game where Town finished 13th in the table.

With the FAW now restructing the leagues, Towns short term goal is to gain promotion into the JD Cymru South and The long-term goal of the club is a place in the Welsh Premier League. A position last held by the old Abergavenny club during the 1992-93 season, when the League of Wales was first formed
