Highly competitive fixture marking the annual commemoration of Jenny Stokes

This weekend Abergavenny and Hereford met in the 5th encounter of the annual mixed hockey match between the 2 clubs to commemorate ex chair Jenny Stokes who died in 2012.

Jenny was a huge driving force behind the club we know and love today. Her time at the club was littered with achievements; she was instrumental in unifying the previously separate Mens and Ladies clubs as one, she forged the committee of many clubs in the town into one to join forces and campaign for the provision of the Astroturf, and she was our club Chairman for many years. Prior to her time at Abergavenny she had proudly represented her country (both England and Great Britain) including being part of the England World Cup winning squad of 1966. She shared her wealth of experience with the club and we are now reaping the rewards of her energy. Jenny passed away in September 2012.

Jenny's son Giles started his playing days at Abergavenny and is now a driving force at Hereford Hockey Club thus the annual get together is a natural choice for what is a proud way to celebrate and commemorate Jenny's life.

This season the clubs decided to mix things up a little bit. Abergavenny chairman Luke Rees made a selection taken from a mix of Abergavenny and Hereford players, and Giles the same. This resulted in a well matched affair with plenty of action. A fully competitive affair saw the result in the balance right to the very end, with Luke's team finally nipping the 5-4 victory.

Played in top spirits on a fantastic late summer afternoon, this was a match fitting of the occasion. All players made generious donations totalling £220 as a donation to Giles' chosen charity Macmillan Cancer Support.
