Last Friday, on a very hot afternoon. Abergavenny Bowls Club Mixed Team continued their successful run when they managed to secure a win against their visitors Guest Memorial BC. They won on two of the three rinks to record a victory by 48 shots to 43. The rink of John Vale held a substantial led after eight ends and then managed to thwart a spirited fight-back by their opponents to win by 18 shots to 16. Matthew Vale’s rink held the lead throughout their game and then scored three shots on the final end to confirm their victory by 18 shots to 14. In a very tight game the rink of Mike Collins unfortunately dropped four shots on the final three ends to lose by 13 shots to 12.
Abergavenny’s MBA team welcomed league topping Pontypool Park/Girling to Avenue Road for a league fixture last Saturday. Although Abergavenny managed to win on two rinks they lost the game by 87 shots to 76.
The two successful rinks for Abergavenny were those of Gethin Hill and Robert Poynter. Gethin Hill’s rink took control of their game from the start, scoring on thirteen of the twenty-one ends, they built an unassailable lead to eventually win by 26 shots to 12. On the rink of Robert Poynter, the game was close with scores being level after eleven ends. The Abergavenny rink then scored eight shots, without reply, over the next four ends which allowed them to post a win by 24 shots to 19.
The rink of John Vale was always struggling to get into the game. The rink managed to score on only eight ends in their defeat by 28 shots to 14. Matthew Vale’s rink was in contention being only five shots behind with six ends to play. Their opponents then seized the initiative, scoring thirteen shots and conceding only two, to win the game by 28 shots to 12.
Abergavenny’s GBL team played a league game at Abertillery, where they won on one rink but lost the game by 66 shots to 42. That one success was by the rink of Maurice Padfield. The rink built a substantial lead and the resisted a late surge by their opponents to win by 23 shots to 20. Both the other rinks of Mary Evans and Mary Vale could not get into their game. The two rinks managed to score on only approximately a third of the ends played and therefore were defeated by 22 shots to 10 and 24 shots to nine respectively.
This coming week Abergavenny Mixed Team will play a league game against Mountain Ash at home on Friday. This will be followed on Saturday when Blaina are the visitors to Avenue Road for a GBL game.
