BUSY BUT EXCITING PRE-SEASON AHEAD

Manager Ian Long has ambitions of a “different culture” at Walsall Wood next season as he looks to build on the club’s 11th place finish this season.

He was made to rue his side’s missed chances in the final game of the season on Saturday as The Wood were defeated 2-0 by AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

Long said: “Claudio Dias missed a one-on-one, Kev Monteiro missed a one-on-one, Charlie Manners missed a couple of one-on-ones. I thought we played well, but if you don’t take your chances and aren’t good enough in the boxes, you get done.

“I thought Oli West has done superbly. He hasn’t played for eight weeks and I thought he was superb. Joe Fitzpatrick has been really good in the last few weeks and seems to be getting fitter.

“There’s certainly been some decent performances today and those sorts of performances will keep players at the club.”

Long discussed the overall form of the season since he took charge at the club in November.

He said: “We’ve really tailed off towards the end. Our form at the start was decent but we’ve just lost too many players and it’s been a revolving door.

“The silver lining has been the FA Trophy run. We came in late on but we had that good result against Hemel Hempstead so that’s probably the highlight.”

Looking ahead to next season, he mentioned that there would be a significant change to the squad as well as club culture.

He said: “Some of the habits that we came into were not great and we’ve been quite relaxed with that sort of thing, but things are going to change massively in the summer. It’ll be a completely different culture at the club.

“Hopefully we can get some new lads in and keep some of the lads here as well, and build a squad that’s competitive towards the top end of the table.”
