A game of two halves

Ossett Women welcomed Selby to Queens Terrace on Sunday in a return fixture. Earlier in the season, Selby had beaten us comfortably after the longest game in the history of rugby and we were fired up and ready to bring it.

Selby looked well drilled in their warm up and travelled in good numbers and they’re a good, young side so we knew we had a challenge on our hands.

Play kicked off with Ossett kicking to Selby who fumbled and chose to kick it straight back to us. This helped Alice to score under the sticks within 46 seconds. Is this a new record? Izzie slotted to conversion over easily.

Not two minutes had passed before Amee went over the line and again Izzie added the extras. 14-0 currently.

Full of enthusiasm at this early lead, Ossett gave it everything they had and capitalised on the fast feet of Ella on the wing who scored out wide but it was unconverted.

Lakey went over not long after for the fourth of the afternoon and this was converted with ease. 26-0 to the hosts.

Harriet was next to go under the sticks with a try after looking a bit confused about whether to put it down or not and this was again converted by the boot of Izzie. Not wanting to be outdone, only a minute later Amee went across for her second and Izzie again booted it over the crossbar. This gave us a half time score of 47-0 against a perplexed Selby.

The second half saw us running uphill and with a fresh head, Selby started the fight back putting their first points on the board with a converted try just after half time and following up with another try minutes later bringing the score to 47-12.

Play stopped momentarily for a Selby injury but once resumed the visitors capitalised and scored another converted try.

Shortly after tempers started to fray. A couple of punches and a shoulder charge from the guests gave the Ossett women a new found fire in their bellies to prove themselves on the pitch and responded with two tries, firstly Harriet and then Alice both going over for their second tries.

Selby went over for their last try in the dying seconds which was converted and with relief the whistle went. Final score 57-26 to Ossett.

Thank you to Selby for travelling, we wish you the best with the rest of your season.
