Club history

Although there was a Cricket Club in the village as early as 1900, little is known about the early years of its existence. We do however know that in those days all the players lived in the village and few if any had received any coaching. Most able bodied men played as there were no other attractions. A ladies team existed until the mid 1950s. The Club had played in one field then another until 1946 when it moved to a field a quarter of a mile down the York Road.. There were no toilet facilities, the outfield was usually long grass and low scores and good bowling figures were normal. The pavilion was an ex Railway carriage and the tea ladies boiled water on a primus stove. The teas - a potted meat sandwich a ground rice tart and a chocolate eclair cost one shilling. The Club moved to the new playing field in 1966 and the Village Hall which doubles as a Clubhouse was built in 1984.
The 1st XI won the Senior Division Championship and the Senior Evening Cup in its first season in the Wetherby and District League in 1946. It won the League Championship again in 1948 and the Senior Evening Cup again in 1954.Since then it has won the Division 2 Championship in 1953 and the Division 3 Championship in 1977 and 1998. In 1984 the 1st XI won the Trimoco Sunday Cup comfortably beating the favourites Spofforth in front of a large crowd at Collingham.
A 2nd XI existed until 1951 and was revived in 1978 winning the Division 5 Championship in 1998 and the Division 6 Championship in 2004.
A 3rd XI played in Division 6 in 2000 but it proved too difficult to run and was withdrawn in 2001.
An XI played in the long since defunct Hessay Evening League in the 1940s and 1950s. A new Whixley Evening League was created in 1963 to replace it and the Club took part in it until 2010. The 1st XI won the Division 1 Championship in 1976 and 1977 and the Division 2 Championship in 2004. For several years the Club also entered a 2nd XI in the Whixley Evening League.
For many years the Club entered various other competitions including the York Senior and Junior Charity Cups, The Myers-Burnell Cup, The Harbord Cup and The National Village Competition.
The Club also entered a Junior (under 17s Team) in the Wetherby and District League in the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 2008 the Club staged a representative match against an Old England XI.
Today in 2013 despite the Village having doubled in size since the 1950s most of the players do not live in it. Big scores and good batting performances are much more frequent thanks to a large extent to the well kept square and outfield.
